Introduction to Islamic Art - June 2010

Written by Administrator

In the Summer of 2010 Karima Arts ran an eight-week 'Introduction to Islamic Art' Course with locally based Islamic artist, Razwan Baig. During the eight weeks, students were introduced to a variety of traditional Islamic arts with a focus on calligraphy. At the end of the course students organised an exhibition displaying their work for the local community. The event also included a short talk by Razwan where he praised the students for their hard work, creativity and determination, and students also spoke about how much they had enjoyed the course and looked forward to the follow up one.

Kalma Tayyaba, Yasmin Hussain

"I was first inspired to paint the kalma tayyaba after seeing Brother Razwan's work.

I started with a blank canvas and spray-painted it yellow. I then began work on the border (tahzib) which took the longest time to complete as it was all drawn free hand.

I selected the colours I wanted to use around the border and began painting. This took me around two weeks to complete. The actual Arabic calligraphy was painted last".
